Today is the official first day of summer! Hooray! The forecast is for sun and heat later in the day (it’s currently 15 and overcast), so I’m crossing my fingers, and hoping for a glorious afternoon.
This day always me of my Dad. Summer is his favourite time of year as well, and he looks forward to it all year long. December 21st is the winter solstice, and the shortest day of the year. After that, the days begin to get longer.
When we were growing up, the morning of December 21st was always to be dreaded. Sort of. You see, early early on that morning, no matter if it was the weekend or a weekday, my Dad would get up when it was still dark, put on a bathing suit, a baseball cap, and other summer wear, grab his trombone and parade thru the house singing “summer’s coming!” and attempting to play the trombone. Hee. My Dad is so crazy – I love it! When I was a teenager, I wasn’t so thrilled about it, because I wanted to sleep. But I definitely appreciated (and still do), his zany-ness, and his excitement about the summer months. I had a picture of him years ago all dressed up like this, and banging on the doors of our bedrooms, but I couldn’t find it. If I ever do, I’ll have to scan it and put it up, because it’s just too priceless.
I’m normally away on vacation on Dec 21st, so that’s why I thought I’d write about this today – the official start of summer. I’m glad that summer is finally officially here, and hopefully the weather will begin to act accordingly.
Have a great weekend!
